In what appears to be a repeat of 2007-8 so far, Colorado is seeing big snowfalls following a slow start to the winter in late November and early December. Last winter several resorts reported record snow accumulations by April after having difficulty opening any terrain for Thanksgiving the previous November.

Marmot Basin in Canada, which was one of the first ski areas in North America to open last month, has received what resort spokesmabn Bririan rode describes as, "a whole pile of snow" over the past week and a half. The Alberta resort received 20cm (eight inches) of new snow last Friday alone.

The Vanoise Express cable car, a key artery of the Paradiski (Les Arcs-La Plagne) ski area, will re-open on Saturday 20 December, in time for the start of the 2008/09 winter season. At the end of several months' work to replace its four load-bearing cables, the Vanoise Express has passed all the required safety tests under the supervision of the Departmental Public Works Authority. After two weeks of testing, the departmental supervisory body granted official approval for the cable car to be put into service and opened to skiers.
