Spain is perhaps not known as a big ski destination by many, but those in the know realise the country is snow-crazy with more than 30 resorts including some of the most important in the world.
In recent years there has been a big surge in interest in Spanish skiing with several companies spending millions on new lifts, lodging and snow making at big resorts like Baqueira Beret, popular with the Spanish royal family, or Formigal.
Spain’s best known resort though is probably Sierra Nevada, the most southerly major resort in Europe and right next to the seaside resort of Malaga and the Mediterranean sea, but still a great ski resort with an impressive snow record, accumulating snow up to five metres deep with skiing well in to May in some years, it is a former venue for the Alpine Ski World Championships.
All in all Spain is famous for friendly, relaxed locals (people don’t usually start partying here until close to midnight) and snowy, sunny skiing in the Pyrenees and other mountainous area around the country – including quite close to Barcelona and Madrid (which also has an indoor snow centre).
