There's been heavy snow falls in the Alps in the past few days, with up to 70cm (2 feet, 4 inches) of snow falling in the past 24 hours on the glaciers, so it's slightly ironic that the number of ski areas open has dropped to seven, after the two French centres of Tignes and Les 2 Alpes ended the country's summer ski season last weekend. Cervinia in Italy is due to follow suit this weekend.

After the big August snowfalls on Swiss glaciers a few weeks ago, there's been little new snow in Europe. The two remaining French summer ski areas are due to end their season this weekend, followed by Italy's Cervinia the weekend after, which along with premature closures in Austria due to limited glacier snowcover, means only seven areas will be open next week.

With the summer ski season ending in France, there are now a few weeks when the country will have no ski slopes open before Tignes re-opens in mid-September. It then operates more-or-less alone for nearly 10 weeks until all the other French ski areas begin to open in late November and early December.

Conditions are largely good in Australia with most resorts now having at least a 60cm (two foot) base, temperatures hovering around freezing, and snow flurries. More of the same is expected for most through the rest of the week and hopefully some bigger snowfalls too.

It's Australian ski areas that have been reporting the world's best snow conditions over the past few days with more than 60cm (two feet) falling in 48 hours at one centre, truly epic by Aussie standards and by far the biggest snowfalls of winter so far - which had been mostly cold to date, allowing for lots of snowmaking, but with limited natural stuff until now.

Changeable weather in the Alps has led to a mix of rain and fresh snow on the 11 glacier ski areas that are currently open. Fortunately temperatures have dropped a lot from a fortnight ago when they were up in double figures at some areas, but they are still above freezing at some - which means thaw of course.

Temperatures have finally dropped in the Alps and fresh snow has fallen on the glacier ski areas that remain open. On the 11 still-open glacier ski areas the snow depth remains little changed but conditions are much improved with temperatures dropping from near double-figures to around zero, the melt largely topped and the fresh snow making surfaces much more ski and boardable.
