Up to 12cm (four inches) of snow in Northern Europe at the start of this week caused traffic problems in Belgium and Holland but also enabled three ski slopes in the southern Belgium Ardennes region have opened (Elsenborn, Mont Spinette and Baraque Michel) with more centres hoping to open later this week.

In what appears to be a repeat of 2007-8 so far, Colorado is seeing big snowfalls following a slow start to the winter in late November and early December. Last winter several resorts reported record snow accumulations by April after having difficulty opening any terrain for Thanksgiving the previous November.
